Traveling with Varicose Veins

Vacation season is here! Don’t let varicose veins ruin your good time. Below is your guide to preventing and dealing with the aches and pains while you’re away in paradise:

Move around on the plane. Sitting still on long flights is uncomfortable as it is, but it’s even worse if you suffer from varicose veins. To make your lengthy trip more tolerable, get up and pace the cabin aisle every 15 to 30 minutes if you can. If you can’t get out of your seat, try simple stretching exercises while sitting in a comfortable position. Stretching out will promote blood circulation from your leg to your heart, which is key to healthy veins!

Avoid tight clothing. You want to look great for a night out on the town, but you want to be comfy too. The solution? Avoid tight fitted pants! Wearing snug bottoms can slow the blood from going back to your heart, especially if the waist area is cutting off your circulation. However, wearing fitted compression stockings for your legs can actually help, as they support blood flow.

Kick your feet up. We know that propping your legs is an effective daily routine for those with varicose veins, so keep it up while you’re away on vacation! For those relaxing hours spent in your hotel room, grab a good book, stretch yourself out in bed or on the couch, and stuff a few pillows under your feet.
